Headless squirrel outside of front door?

This morning me and my roommate woke up to find this squirrel, who looks like he never had a top half of his body. You have to walk up two flights of stairs to get to the top where we found this, any ideas how this could have happened? The tail also looks rotted and nasty if you zoom in.
